Posted: 28 Oct 2012 09:19 AM PDT The National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its latest advisory updated on Hurricane Sandy, which is being expected to be a “super storm” and may affect millions of people in the East Coast. Its landfall is being predicted to be on the night of Monday, October 29, 2012. As noted at NHC.NOAA.gov at Sunday, October 28, Hurricane Sandy is being forecast to bring life-threatening storm surge flooding to the mid-Atlantic coast, including Long Island Sound and New York Harbor, and may strongly be felt in Boston, New York, Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. As of 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, NHC reported Hurricane Sandy is at 32.5N 72.6W, about 250 miles (400 km) SE of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and about 575 miles (930 km ) S of New York City, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and moving Northeast at 14 mph (22 kph). “Hurricane Sandy will bring sustained winds of tropical storm-force to a 1000-mile swath of coast on Monday and Tuesday. Winds of 55 – 75 mph with gusts over hurricane force will occur along a 500 mile-wide section of coast.” Hurricane specialist Dr. Jeff Masters wrote at Weather Underground blog on Sunday. “The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making,” A power outage computer model run by Johns Hopkins University predicts that 10 million people will lose power from the storm.” Dr. Masters added, noting that Sandy‘s storm surge is extremely dangerous. According to FlightAware.com on Sunday, more than 3,000 flights have been cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, including 707 flights cancelled to/from/within the US on Sunday, and another 2,499 flights cancelled to/from/within the US for Monday, October 29. Most affected is Newark International Airport (EWR). United Airlines is being expected to be most affected since it will shutdown DC operations around 7-8pm (Sunday night) and PHL and JFK/EWR/LGA operations as well, between 6-7pm (Sunday night). Both operations are being planned for resume sometime on Tuesday, October 30. Hurricane Sandy satellite image (As of 10:16 a.m. ET, Sunday, October 28, 2012) Image Credit: NASA/WUnderground.com |
Presidential Polls: Latest California Poll 2012 Results Shows Obama Losing State Popularity Posted: 28 Oct 2012 01:41 AM PDT The latest 2012 presidential polls conducted by several firms, except Gallup poll, showed that US President Barack Obama still enjoys the lead over Republican candidate Mitt Romney. With less than two weeks before the 2012 US Presidential elections, however, a California presidential poll indicates the fading popularity of the US President in the blue state. The USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Time presidential poll result, however, indicates that Obama will be unable to duplicate his 2008 historic poll victory. As of posting, the Democratic President has 14-point advantage over the Republican nominee among likely voters. In 2008, Obama had a 24-point advantage, consider as one the biggest margin in history, against his former Republican presidential rival John McCain. Political analysts pointed out the decline of Obama‘s popularity among white and men voters. After enjoying an 18-point advantage from male voters in 2008, Obama has only a one point lead among likely male voters. Obama had a two-percentage lead over McCain but now trails Romney by 17 points. The US President meanwhile, has a 26 point advantage over the Republican candidate among likely female voters. The USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Time poll result also showed that 51 percent of California residents were not satisfied in the nation’s direction. Election Day is scheduled on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. |
James Harden Trade: OKC sends Harden to Houston in six-player deal Posted: 27 Oct 2012 11:15 PM PDT James Harden traded to Rockets Image Credit: NBA.com James Harden has been traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets, according to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo! Sports and Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman on Sunday, October 28, 2012. The six-player Harden trade deal was reportedly due to the inability of both sides to agree on the shooting guard’s contract extension. Wojnarowski’s anonymous source said that “Harden rejected a four-year offer that would have paid him a base salary of $53 million to $54 million.” Reports say that Harden has been pushing for at least a $60 million contract. However, the Thunder was unable to meet the demands of the shooting guard because of maximum contracts given to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and the $52 million contract of Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins. Oklahoma reportedly will be giving up Harden, Cole Aldridge, Lazar Hayward and Daequan Cook in exchange for Houston star Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb and future draft picks. The reigning KIA Sixth Man of the Year will reportedly be given a four-year, $60 million contract by Houston. |

New York Times endorses Obama for President for the second time Posted: 27 Oct 2012 08:39 PM PDT The New York Times endorses Obama for president in the coming elections; a day after Washington Post announced their endorsement, also to him. The announcement was made on Saturday, October 27, 2012 on their editorial post titled “Barack Obama for Re-election,” with the paper also endorsing Obama in 2008. US President Barack Obama Image Credit: AFP/Getty Images According to New York Times on Saturday, their endorsement to President Obama was based on his achievements during his four years in office, citing some factors related to health care, economy, foreign affairs, the US Supreme Court, and civil rights. They also mentioned their thoughts about Mitt Romney. On the start of their post, the NY Times noted that the US economy is recovering slowly from the 2008 meltdown and the country will likely suffer from another recession if the budget policies amended by President Obama was not right, which they said showed a firm commitment to increase the economy. “Mr. Obama has impressive achievements despite the implacable wall of refusal erected by Congressional Republicans so intent on stopping him that they risked pushing the nation into depression, held its credit rating hostage, and hobbled economic recovery.” The New York Times wrote. “We have criticized individual policy choices that Mr. Obama has made over the last four years, and have been impatient with his unwillingness to throw himself into the political fight. But he has shaken off the hesitancy that cost him the first debate, and he approaches the election clearly ready for the partisan battles that would follow his victory.” The New York Times added. “Mr. Obama has achieved the most sweeping health care reforms since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965…Mr. Romney has no plan for covering the uninsured beyond his callous assumption that they will use emergency rooms.” The paper said of the two candidates for their health care programs. “Mr. Obama prevented another Great Depression. The economy was cratering when he took office in January 2009…Contrary to Mr. Romney‘s claims; Mr. Obama has done good things for small businesses — like pushing through more tax write-offs for new equipment and temporary tax cuts for hiring the unemployed.” The New York Times noted. In the last part, the paper compared the stand of Obama and Romney with respect to civil rights. The president earlier announced the end of the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in the military for the LGBT community, while Romney had expressed his strong opposition on same-sex marriage. |
