Disney ship hammered: Disney cruise ship ‘Disney Fantasy’ hit by Hurricane Sandy (Video)

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 11:22 AM PDT

Disney Fantasy, a Disney cruise ship, was hit by Hurricane Sandy on Friday, October 26, 2012, and passengers grabbed their cameras to record the incident, as shown in the video below. The ship was then passing past across Miami, Florida, and the so-called Frankenstorm is approaching the East Coast.

According to a post at CNN iReport on Sunday, Dr. David Evans, an optometrist from Germantown, Tennessee and owner of Total Eye Care, said that he and his wife attended a seven day trip boarding the 13-storey Disney cruise ship for a vacation, and the incident happened on their sixth day.

“The final night of our seven-day cruise aboard the new Disney Fantasy was certainly not magical. Many crew members, some with over ten years of experience on various ships, told us it was the worst night they have ever seen.” Dr. Evans wrote, using the username tneyedoc2020 in his story.

“By 12:00 AM Saturday, the ship was being tossed in every direction. The sliding doors to the bedroom in the suite began to quickly slam open and shut. Around 2 AM, there was a violent tossing of the ship from side-to-side and most of the furniture was overturned in our room.” Dr. Evans added.

In the video, which the passenger said was taken during the early evening hours on Friday; Disney Fantasy can be seen shaking due to Hurricane Sandy. Doors are slamming and things including furniture and glassware are scattered all over the place. The water of the pool was emptied and went everywhere.

“Shortly after the most intense moments, the ship’s captain announced that all passengers should remain their rooms. The two upscale restaurants (Palo and Remy) had major damage. One exterior door was destroyed near our cabin.” The doctor explained, noting that the Disney cruise ship docked several hours late.

Dr. Evans stressed out that the ship captain and crew members did the best way they could, and were apologetic for what happened, noting that Disney told them they will be given a 25% discount on our next cruise travel. In general, the Disney cruise ship had minor damages but is still intact.

Steve Jobs yacht ‘Venus’ unveiled in the Netherlands, powered with Apple’s iMac (Video)

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 09:44 AM PDT

Venus, Steve Jobs‘ yacht, was spotted for the first time publicly on Sunday, October 28, 2012 in Aalsmeer, Netherlands, as shown in the video below. The ship of the late Apple‘s co-founder and CEO was unveiled, a year after he passed away, and was also mentioned in his biography book, written by Walter Isaacson.

According to Dutch site OneMoreThing.nl that day, which uploaded an exclusive video of the Christening ceremony, Steve Jobs‘ widow Laurene and their children Reed, Erin and Eve were present and gave iPod Shuffles to the crew members who helped build the boat, with ‘Venus‘ printed on it and a note thanking them.

As noted in the report, ship employees told them that Jobs‘ yacht, whose name was taken from Roman goddess of love and beauty, was between 230 and 260 feet long. Its exterior was made entirely of aluminum, making it much lighter than other yachts. It was launched at shipbuilder Koninklijke De Vries.

Among the notable key features of Jobs‘ yacht include having seven 27-inch iMacs in its control room. It has large paned windows that are not the same with those being seen in Apple stores, along with a large sun terrace with a Jacuzzi on the foredeck.

“I know that it’s possible I will die and leave Laurene with a half-built boat. But I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.” Jobs, who passed away on October 5, 2011, was quoted at The Verge, describing to Isaacson in his biography book, which is quite similar to what has been reported.

“By then the boat was under construction by the Dutch custom yacht builders Feadship, but Jobs was still fiddling with the design.” Isaacson wrote, with Jobs reportedly spent 6 years designing the yacht with French designer Philippe Starck.

The new campaign slogan of US President Barack Obama was reportedly launched last week with an exclamation point instead of a period. Obama‘s new slogan reads as “Forward!

Reports say that the tweaked slogan was immediately in effect in all Obama campaign signs and banners.

Spokeswoman of Obama‘s campaign, Jennifer Psaki, explained that the additional exclamation point symbolizes “the stakes in this election and energy at our events.”

Obama‘s camp aims to liven up the US President‘s re-election bid with the new slogan.

However, social netizens criticized the change in Obama‘s slogan. The “Forward!” word reportedly was associated with the European Marxism.

Political analysts also doubts that the new Obama slogan will have no impact on the 2012 US Presidential Elections on Tuesday, November 6, 2012.

According to a post at RasmussenReports.com this Monday morning, Mitt Romney has attracted 49% of likely voters across the US, while President Obama had 47%. One percent (1%) prefers some other candidate, and another two percent (2%) remain undecided. Romney‘s lead on Sunday was 3 percent.

Apparently, this is the first time in 7 days that Romney had votes lower than 50% and had a two-point percentage points over Obama. During the past 6 days, the 65-year old former Massachusetts governor is leading by a three- or four-point edge over the president.

Meanwhile, 54% of US likely voters are against Obamacare, or the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which Rasmussen Reports noted is the same percentage of those who support its repeal, a week after the law was passed in March 23, 2010. Fifty percent of voters said they believe the cost of health care will rise due to the law.

On the other hand, 39% of likely voters are in favor to Obamacare. This includes 43% who are Strongly Favor repeal, and 30% who are Strongly Opposed to it. In addition, 80% of likely voters said they believe that Mitt Romney may repeal the Obamacare law if he wins the presidency this coming November 6 election.

Rasmussen Reports said that the telephone survey was made to 1,000 Likely Voters on October 27-28, 2012 (Saturday-Sunday), and that the the margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Titan supercomputer: ORNL launches giant computer capable of doing 20,000 trillion calculations per second

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 06:14 AM PDT

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) launched on Sunday, October 28, 2012 its Titan supercomputer, a giant computer that is capable of doing 20,000 trillion calculations per second. The project, which is in Tennessee, is being supported by the US Department of Energy’s (DOE).

According to pdf file press release at OLCF.ORNL.gov that day, the Titan supercomputer will employ a family of processors called graphic processing units (GPU) which was first created for computer games, which can perform 20 petaflops, or over 20,000 trillion calculations per second.

As noted in the report, Titan will be 10 times more powerful than its predecessor, Jaguar, ORNL‘s earlier super high-performance level computer. Both devices have the same size, which is roughly the size of a basketball court, while each stack is about the size of a household kitchen refrigerator.

Titan is a Cray-XK7 system, which has more than 700 terabytes of memory, contains 18,688 nodes. Each of these nodes holds a 16-core AMD Opteron 6274 processor and a Tesla K20, NVIDIA‘s latest GPU accelerator. It will rely on its 299,008 CPU cores to guide simulations, allowing Tesla K20 to do its heavy task.

Titan will allow scientists to simulate physical systems more realistically and in far greater detail.” James Hack, director of ORNL‘s National Center for Computational Sciences, was quoted in the report, with the supercomputer to be used computing power for research in energy, climate change, among others.

“The improvements in simulation fidelity will accelerate progress in a wide range of research areas such as alternative energy and energy efficiency, the identification and development of novel and useful materials, and the opportunity for more advanced climate projections.” Mr. Hack added.

“One challenge in supercomputers today is power consumption. Combining GPUs and CPUs in a single system requires less power than CPUs alone and is a responsible move toward lowering our carbon footprint.” Jeff Nichols, associate laboratory director for computing and computational science, said.

Madonna booed at MDNA concert in New Orleans, after telling fans to vote Obama for president (Video)

Madonna was booed on her MDNA concert on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at New Orleans Arena in Los Angeles, as shown the video below. The incident happened when the 54-year old singer was talking to her fans, and told them to vote for Barack Obama on his second term as President of the United States.

As noted at New York Daily News on Sunday, October 28, some Madonna fans did not seem to like the singer’s statement when she told her audience to vote for Obama for president this coming November 6 presidential elections. Although there are a lot of fans who cheered for her, some reportedly walked out.

“Jokingly aside, it is very important that you vote. Who’s registered to vote? I don’t care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama.” Madonna said on the stage, and then drinks from her bottled water. Loud cheers were heard, but there were also some booes along the side, which the ‘Material Girl’ singer heard.

“Are they booing me?” Madonna asked to a fan near her. Then, she faced backwards to the crowd, bends over and slightly lifted her dress. “Seriously, I don’t care who you vote for…Do not take this privilege for granted. Go vote…We are very lucky, we have a democratic government.” She added.

Apparently, this is not the first time that Madonna had a controversy on her MDNA concert tour. Back in July, a swastika was placed on an image of Front National (FN) leader Marine Le Pen‘s forehead, during her concert at the Stade De France in Paris, and was criticized by FN’s vice-president Florian Philippot.

Last month, Madonna also endorsed President Obama during her MDNA concert at Verizon Center in Washington D.C.. “For better or for worse, all right? We have a black Muslim in the White House. It means there is hope in this country. And Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man.” She was quoted as saying.
