As noted in the press release by General Motors (GM) on its official press site that day, a panel of 49 automotive judges from across Canada and US have chosen the 2013 Cadillac ATS to be the Car of the Year 2013 in a press conference during the opening the 25th Annual NAIAS in Detroit, Michigan.

“This is a very meaningful honor for the entire Cadillac team, especially the men and women who build the ATS in Lansing, Michigan, and our dedicated and talented designers and engineers.” Bob Ferguson, GM Vice President of Cadillac Global, was quoted in the report. The new ATS was released to dealers in late 2012.

“A car like ATS is the result of incredible commitment and focus. That’s the only method for creating a great performing luxury car.” Ferguson added, with the new Cadillac ATS being noted to be the lightest car in its class with a unique architecture and was designed for nimble driving performance.

On the other hand, Chrysler‘s 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 won the 2013 Truck/Utility of the Year award, and was also chosen by the same panel of judges, which includes automotive journalists and broadcasters during a year-long selection process. The three finalists for both categories were picked last month.

“For the Ram truck brand, this ranks as one of the proudest days in our history. Every truck maker aspires to win the North American Truck/Utility of the Year.” Fred Diaz, President and CEO of Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, was quoted during the announcement.

“I tip my hat to the folks who worked behind the scenes to make the 2013 Ram 1500 a technological triumph. You can’t every rest on your laurels and say it’s time to relax. There’s never time to relax.” Diaz added, noting that Chrysler still has a lot of work ahead to ensure that their cars and trucks are competitive.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS beat the 2013 Ford Fusion and 2013 Honda Accord for the 2013 North American Car of the Year, while the 2013 Ram 1500 pickup won against the 2013 Ford C-Max and the 2013 Mazda CX-5 for the North American Truck/Utility of the Year 2013 award.

Coca Cola obesity ad: New Coke commercial ‘Coming Together’ talks about fighting obesity (Video)

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 07:48 AM PST

A Coca Cola obesity ad was released online on Monday, January 14, 2013 titled “Coming Together,” as shown in the video below. With obesity being a major growing problem in the US, the new Coke commercial is inviting business and government leaders, as well the public to join hands in finding a solid solution.

“For over 125 years, we’ve been bringing people together. Today, we’d like people to come together on something that concerns all of us: obesity…And as the nation’s leading beverage company, we can play an important role.” A female sweet voice said on the two-minute Coca Cola anti-obesity ad.

Coca Cola, via its obesity campaign commercial that will later appear on US TV and cable networks, noted that the company offers 180 low- and no-calorie beverages in their more than 650 beverage products. Coke also mentioned its previous and current programs in in fighting obesity on adult and children in the US.

“Beating obesity will take action by all of us, based on one simple common-sense fact: All calories count. No matter where they come from including Coca-Cola and everything else with calories. And if you eat and drink more calories than you burn off, you’ll gain weight.” The voice-over announcer added.

“We are committed to bring people together to help fight obesity. This is about the health and happiness of everyone who buys our products and wants great-tasting beverages, choice, and information.” Stuart Kronauge, General Manager, Sparkling Beverages, Coca-Cola North America, was quoted at Coca-ColaCompany.com.

“The Coca-Cola Company has an important role in this fight. Together, with willing partners, we will succeed.” Kronauge added, as another new Coke commercial titled “Be OK” set to be released on ‘American Idol’ on Wednesday, January 16, which will encourage people to have some fun while burning calories.

However, not everyone seemed to be happy with the new Coca Cola commercial. This includes the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), an anti-obesity organization that released an animated short film last October called “The Real Bears,” which featured bears that are notably similar to the Coca-Cola polar bears.

“The soda industry is under siege, and for good reason. This new advertising campaign is just a damage control exercise, and not a meaningful contribution toward addressing obesity.” CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson was quoted in a statement at CSPINet.org also on Monday.

“What the industry is trying to do is forestall sensible policy approaches to reducing sugary drink consumption, including taxes, further exclusion from public facilities, and caps on serving sizes such as the measure proposed by Mayor (Michael) Bloomberg.” Jacobson added.

Fish grabs man’s arm, jumps out from water, goes viral (Video)

A huge fish grabs a man’s arm, after it jumps out from water and refuses to let go. The man and his companions were surprised, and tried to catch the fish but failed. The incident, which was believed to have happened in a pier in Florida, was captured on camera, as shown in the video below, and went viral.

According to the description on the YouTube video, which was uploaded on Saturday, January 12, 2013, a Florida angler named Ryan Reynolds dangles his right arm from the edge of a pier, hoping to attract a fish under the water. Shortly after, a big white fish suddenly surfaced and grabbed his arm, which surprised everyone.

Despite being stunned, Reynolds kept his composure and attempts to get up to bring the fish, which was believed to be tarpon, above the wood surface. A woman can be heard screaming on top of her voice. Another woman and a man came to help the angler, as he tries to hold on to the big fish above the water.

While the woman continues to scream, Ryan managed to pull the fish as he wrestles with the tarpon, which keeps on wagging its body and seemed to be trying to let go of his arm. Later, the angler lost his balance and dropped on the floor along with the fish, with his arm still inside its mouth.

But moments later, the fish let go the man’s arm and successfully escaped and went back to the water. Although Reynolds can be seen walking, it was believed that he had wounds caused by the tarpon, which according to Wikipedia can grow to about 5–8 ft. long and could weigh from 80 up to 280 lbs.

Tarpons, which belong to the species called Megalops, are known to be not for human consumption, so most of them are released after they are caught. Nevertheless, they are mainly caught for sport or during fishing tournaments. But for Reynolds, it appears that he did not use a fishing rod and tried to catch it with bare hands.
