As noted at NHL.com this Sunday morning, the NHL and NHLPA ended their lengthy meeting in New York City, and arrived on a tentative agreement. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr talked to some reporters, just minutes after 5:30 a.m. ET, as shown in the video below.

Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters, noting that it still needs to be approved by all the parties involved.

“We have to dot a lot of I’s and cross a lot of T’s. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework has been agreed upon. We are not in a position to give you information right now about schedule, when we are starting.” Bettman added, noting that more information will be announced later.

“As Gary just indicated, we have the framework of a deal. We have to do the legal work and we have to do the constituent-communication work. At least, from my [standpoint], and I’m sure Gary‘s too, we need to let them know the details before we tell all of you.” NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr said.

As reported earlier, among the NHL games that were cancelled earlier include the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend (January 26-27, 2013) and the 2013 Winter Classic games. This 2012-2103 NHL lockout started on September 15, 2012, following the expiration of league’s CBA.

Famed shipwreck could be two, more secrets to uncover, researchers say

A famed Roman shipwreck could be two as provided by the evidence being studied by scientists. These new findings were made public during the annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America on Friday, January 4, 2013.

The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and the American Philological Association (APA) is currently having a joint meeting from January 3-6 at the Washington State Convention Center and the Sheraton Seattle Hotel in Seattle, Washington.

Live Science reported that some of the findings suggests that there may be two sunken Roman ship in the Greek island of Antikythera.

The Roman shipwreck became famous due to the enormous amount of century artifacts that include an Antikythera mechanism, a complex bronze gear device used to calculate astronomical positions, bronze and marble statues, jars and figurines.

It reportedly sunk during the first century B.C. and is resting underneath the sea cliff. Reports say that the location of the shipwreck cannot be reached using an ordinary scuba diving gear. This makes it very hard for scientists to fully explore and study the sunken Roman ship.

Researchers reveal that more artifacts were still intact. Brendan Foley, an archaeologist and researcher at Woods Hold Oceanographic Institution, raised some intriguing questions during the annual meeting. “What else could be down there?” Foley said. “Are there more pieces of the known Antikythera mechanism? Is there another mechanism down there?”

A plan to check the site is being planned researchers for next year. Scientists are trying to uncover more of the Roman shipwreck secrets. Foley said that “the site has been so intruded upon for more than a century it gets really hard to disambiguate what’s myth and what’s fact.”

The National Hockey League (NHL) and National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) have resumed their talks on Day 112 of the current NHL lockout, which has already caused the cancellation of 625 games of 2012-2013 regular-season from October 2012 to January 14, 2013, or 50.8 percent of the 1,230 games.

According to a report at NHL.com today, Sunday, January 6, 2013, the main negotiators from the NHL and NHLPA are now in a meeting that has been going on for 14 hours, as of 2:45 a.m. ET Sunday. The purpose of the meeting is to establish a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“The parties have been meeting since approximately 12:45 pm today. Slow progress is being made. We hope to continue meeting to resolve as many open issues as we possibly can in pursuit of an agreement.” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly was quoted as saying on late Saturday night.

Apparently, this is the first time that the two sides have met since last Thursday, after a two-day meeting separately with federal mediator Scot L. Beckenbaugh. Among the NHL games that were cancelled earlier include the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend (January 26-27, 2013) and the 2013 Winter Classic games.

Meanwhile, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman noted that a deal should be closed by Friday, January 11 so that the 2012-2013 Season can start on Saturday, January 19, for a 48-game schedule, which will be the same number of games played after the 1994-1995 NHL lockout.

Back in early October last year, NHL announced the cancellation of the first 2 weeks of the NHL season games due to the lockout. It was followed by a series of games cancellation despite meetings between the NHL and the NHLPA, after no CBA agreement has been reached.

iPhone thief tricked by male owner, after pretending to be a gorgeous lady who wants to date him

An iPhone thief was tricked by the male owner, after he pretended to be a gorgeous young lady who wanted to have a date with him. These days, it seems to be very difficult to recover a stolen smartphone. But in this case, thanks for the stupidity of the robber and his deep interest for women. Here is what happened.

According to the New York Post this Friday, January 4, 2013, Nadav Nirenberg of Park Slope, Brooklyn accidentally left his iPhone 4 at the back of a taxi cab on New Year’s Eve. The next day, he was surprised when he learned his stolen phone is being used at dating website, OKCupid.

Nirenberg, 27, who plays trombone in the punk band Streetlight Manifesto, also learned that the iPhone thief is sending ‘romantic’ messages to different girls, hoping to convince them to have a date with him. This is despite the fact that Nadav left a message that he will give a reward to anyone who will return back his smartphone.

“I could log on and see everything he was sending. He was even using my photo,” Nirenberg told the paper, adding that this gave him an idea to catch the culprit and get back his iPhone. Through the help of a friend and Google Images, he created a fake OKCupid account by the name of “Jennifer Gonzalez.”

“As soon as he responded, it was pretty crazy. It was extremely surreal. I used lots of winks and smiley faces so I would seem like a girl.” Nirenberg said, noting that he used a photo of a 24-year old gorgeous woman and easily convinced the unidentified suspect that he wanted to have a date with him.

Shortly after, the two agreed to meet at Nirenberg‘s apartment at 7 p.m. that night, and the iPhone thief arrived on time, cleanly shaved and smelled like cologne. Nadav said he immediately pulled out a hammer and demanded him to give his phone back, and the “dream date” the bandit expected did not happen.

The iPhone thief, whom Nirenberg noted was shorter than him, did not think twice and returned the phone to its rightful owner. Nadav said he gave him $20 in return, and the “meeting” lasted only for about 20 seconds. He noted that he did not file a police report because he only wants his iPhone 4 back.

Ryoji Yagi, a Tsukiji fish market official, revealed that the 222-kilogram (489-pound) bluefin tuna, caught off Oma in Aomori prefecture in northeastern Japan, was sold for 155.4 million yen or $1.76 million.

Kyodo Agency reported that the world record tuna will later be served as sushi and sashimi by winning bidder, Kiyoshi Kimura. He is the President of Kiyomura Co. that operates several restaurant chains that include the famous Sushi-Zanmai restaurant.

Last January 6, 2012, Kimura set a record for a bluefin tuna when he provided the highest bid of $736,000 during the New Year‘s auction.

As the bluefin tuna keeps registering new record highs in an auction, its world-wide stocks however, is reportedly on the downtrend over the past 15 years due to uncontrolled fishing.

NASA's Curiosity Rover reportedly spotted new photos of Mars with a "flower" embedded in a Martian rock, according to Space.com reports, January 6, 2012.

Based on reports, the so-called Mars “flower” photo was taken last December 19 by the microscope-like Mars Hand Lends Imager at the end of Curiosity’s robotic arm. Likewise, the rover has also found a snake-like rock formation winding across the Mars surface.

Reports added Curiosity has seen bits of clear plastic (pieces of the rover itself) on the surface of Mars before, but NASA officials said that doesn't appear to be the case this time.

Guy Webster, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) spokesman told NBCNews.com that the object “appears to be part of the rock, not debris from the spacecraft.”

According to reports, Mars Rover Curiosity landed last August 5 for a two-year primary mission of determining whether Mars could have once been habitable for primitive microbial life.

Currently, it is driving toward a 5-kilometer mountain rising from the center of its Gale Crater landing site.

Black iceberg photo viral: Reddit user uploads image

As of posting, the black iceberg photo uploaded by Reddit user Runboll was viewed 1,156,720 times and has received 1,222 comments.

The Canadian Encyclopedia has an explanation for this rare phenomenon. According to the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada:

The Others may appear green, brown or black, or combinations of these colours. These icebergs have usually rolled over, exposing basal ice, or have emerged from below water level. The various colorations are caused by differences in density, air-bubble content and impurities. For example, black ice is of high density and bubble free; dark layers indicate the presence of rock materials derived from the base of the parent glacier. Occasionally, rocks may be found on the original upper surface of the iceberg. As the iceberg melts, these materials precipitate into marine or lake sediments.

But do you believe that this photo of the black iceberg is for real? Or is this just a product of Photoshop enhancement?
