Store Mannequins Spy On Customers While Shopping

Posted: 20 Nov 2012 01:10 PM PST

Store mannequins could be spying on customers nowadays while they shop, international news sites reported on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.

According to reports, mannequins from Italy‘s Almax called EyeSee, has a camera installed in one of its eye sockets with a facial recognition software. The software logs the age, gender and age of passers-by, enabling the shops to profile their customers and adjust to their needs.

According to Almax, one of its customers introduced a Chinese-speaking staff by the entrance after the EyeSee mannequins showed that one-third of their patrons after 4pm were Asians. Meanwhile, another unnamed retailer introduced a kid’s clothing line after EyeSee showed kids made up more than half of its afternoon visitors.

Reports said that the technology worries privacy advocates, saying that the system is “creepy.”

“Keeping cameras hidden in a mannequin is nothing short of creepy. The use of covert surveillance technology by shops, in order to provide a personalised service, seems totally disproportionate,” Emma Carr, deputy director of civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Benetton is one of the retailers currently using the technology, reports said.

Mount Doom Likely To Blow In The Coming Weeks

Posted: 20 Nov 2012 04:03 AM PST

According to reports, New Zealand‘s Department of Conservation (DOC) has warned hikers to avoid the volcano because a recent temperature readings of Mount Doom indicate a high probability of eruption in the coming weeks.

“We think that the temperature a few hundred meters beneath Crater Lake is about 800 Celsius [1,472 degrees Fahrenheit], but the lake itself is only about 20 C [68 F],” volcanologist Steven Sherburn reportedly said in an alert bulletin released by GNS Science, a New Zealand geologic hazard monitoring organization.

“This suggests the vent is partly blocked, which may be leading to a pressure buildup beneath Crater Lake.”

The volcano last erupted in 2007, reports said. History says that it has had major eruptions every 20 to 50 years with the last major eruptions happening in 1995 and 1996, according to DOC.
