iPhone 5S production to start in early 2013, Apple to start trial in December 2012, reports say

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 09:02 AM PST

The so-called iPhone 5S is reportedly to start its production in early 2013, with Apple being expected to conduct a trial this coming December 2012, following with the huge success of iPhone 5, after it was unveiled last September 12. A new version of the iPad is also being rumored for release soon after.

According to Steve Shen of DigiTimes on his report on Monday, November 12, 2012, Apple is being expected to start the trial production of iPhone 5S as early as December this year, with an initial volume possibly from 50,000 to 100,000 units, and the actual production likely to be in the first quarter of 2013.

As noted at DigiTimes.com, a report from Chinese-language site Commercial Times suggests that “Apple has accelerated the certification processes for related parts and components for the iPhone 5S” and that the company is on now in a low-yield production of the iPhone 5.

In addition, this latest Apple rumor also revealed that a new version of iPad is likely to be released a quarter later after the release of the iPhone 5S, noting that the display resolution of the iPad 4 is smaller, which was unveiled last October 23 in an Apple event, where the iPad mini was also announced.

Meanwhile, there were various reactions about this first iPhone 5S rumor, with most of them saying that the schedule that was provided is somehow not in the usual trend in the calendar of release for new Apple products. Others noted that the origin of the report has no solid credibility in making predictions.

“For the past two years, iPhones have come out in the fall, while iPad models have debuted in the spring. Before that, Apple announced new models of the iPhone in the summer at the Worldwide Developers conference.” A statement reads at Washington Post, citing the usual schedule of Apple‘s new products.

Sphinx destruction being called for by Egyptian Jihadi leader during live TV interview

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 07:28 AM PST

A so-called Sphinx destruction is now being called for by an Egyptian Islamist and Jihadi leader, who admitted he once worked with the Taliban, noting that it should be destroyed along with the pyramids in Egypt. The Sphinx and the pyramids are being considered part of the Egyptian heritage for a long time.

According to MSN Arabia on Sunday, November 11, 2012, Murgan Salem al-Gohary (some reports spell it as Morgan Al-Gohary) appeared in Dream TV, a private Egyptian TV channel last Saturday night, and declared that he will destroy the Sphinx and the pyramids, if he and his ilk ever came to power.

As noted in the report, Al-Gohary, 50, who was sentenced twice under the administration of former Egpytian President Hosni Mubarak, which one of them was life imprisonment, is an “advocate of violence.” He was released from prison after the fall of Mubarak back in February 2011.

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues. God ordered Prophet Mohamed to destroy idols. When I was with the Taliban we destroyed the statue of Buddha, something the government failed to do.” Al-Gohary was quoted in the TV interview.

As reported by CNN this Tuesday, Al-Gohary was joined by two other guests in that TV interview and that show host Wael Al-Abrashi asked him three times about his call for the Sphinx destruction, and the Jihadi leader also answered thrice, all with the same answers.

“Am I going to wake up tomorrow to find that, just as you did with the statue of Buddha, that you have demolished the Sphinx and the pyramids?” Al-Abrashi reportedly asked Al-Gohary, who without hesitation replied, “That is dependent upon abilities and possibility. According to our Sharia, every pagan and idol must be destroyed.”

“If you are in power, will you destroy the Sphinx and the pyramids and all the pharoanic statues and all the pharoanic artifacts?” Al-Abrashi asked him again. After Al-Gohary responded, the show host asked for the third time to confirm his answer.

“Everything, if it is a pagan statue or idol, that is worshiped or suspected to be worshipped, or is worshipped by one person on Earth, must be destroyed. We, or someone else, must destroy it.” Al-Gohary said, adding later, “Yes, we will destroy them, if they were worshipped before or afterwards.”

Amazon Best Books of 2012: “The Round House” By Louise Erdrich Tops The Top 10 Editors’ Picks

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 07:16 AM PST

Amazon.com announced its selections for Best Books of 2012 on Monday, November 12, 2012. According to its press release, this annual feature includes the Editors’ Picks for the Top 100 Books of the Year and Top 10 lists in over two dozen categories. The Round House by Louise Erdrich tops the editors’ pick of the year.

Among the categories included with the Top 10 list are Literature & Fiction, Children’s Books and Celebrity Picks, a new feature that includes the favorites of well-known people such as Stephen King, Gillian Flynn and Salman Rushdie.

“Our team of Amazon editors is very passionate about books, and it was tough to choose just one for the top of our list this year. We are confident that we've chosen a list that customers will be excited about. Our top choice comes from the venerable author, Louise Erdrich; 'The Round House' has been a team favorite since we first read it this past summer, and we kept coming back to this beautifully written novel as our best book of the year,” Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle at Amazon.com was quoted as saying in the press release.

Below is the complete list of the Top 10 Editors’ Picks for the year as posted in the press release:

1. "The Round House" by Louise Erdrich: Likely to be dubbed the Native American "To Kill a Mockingbird," Erdrich's moving, complex and surprisingly uplifting new novel tells of a boy's coming of age in the wake of a brutal, racist attack on his mother.

2. "The Yellow Birds: A Novel" by Kevin Powers: With this compact and emotional debut novel, Iraq War veteran Powers eyes the casual violence of war with a poet's precision, moving confidently between scenes of blunt atrocity and almost hallucinatory detachment.

3. "Gone Girl: A Novel" by Gillian Flynn: Masterfully plotted from start to finish, the suspense doesn't waver for one page. It's one of those books you will feel the need to discuss immediately after finishing. The ending punches you in the gut.

4. "The End of Your Life Book Club" by Will Schwalbe: As much an homage to literature as to the mother who shared it with him, Schwalbe's chronicling of his mother's death to cancer—they wait, they talk, they read together—is nothing less than captivating.

5. "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk: A Novel" by Ben Fountain: Debut novelist Fountain follows a squad of marines as they engage in a "victory tour" in the States. Set mostly during halftime at a Dallas Cowboy's football game, Fountain skillfully illustrates what it's like to go to war, and how bizarre and disconcerting it can be for these grunts to return from combat to the country they love.

6. "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity" by Katherine Boo: This searing portrait of life in a Mumbai slum reads like a novel, but it's all-too-true. Pulitzer Prize-winner Boo's writing is superb, and the depth and courage of her reporting from this hidden world is astonishing.

7. "A Hologram for the King" by Dave Eggers: Both disturbing and funny, this novel from onetime wunderkind Eggers shows surprising depth. A man's wayward attempt to find himself and retake his life delivers him to Saudi Arabia but the journey abroad is also internal, and it ends up saying as much about life in America as in the Middle East.

8. "The Middlesteins: A Novel" by Jami Attenberg: A quick read that's more complex than it seems at first, this story about a Midwestern Jewish family is both recognizable (sometimes uncomfortably so) and entertainingly idiosyncratic.

9. "Mortality" by Christopher Hitchens: Like the late author himself, this book is funny, smart, entertaining and unflinching to the end. "Mortality" has the power to change ideas that you might have held immutable—which is one of the best things you can say about a book.

10. "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green: This soulful novel originally written for teenagers tackles big subjects—life, death, love—with the perfect blend of levity and heart-swelling emotion.

Customers can visit the Best Books of 2012 webpage to see all of the books that made it to the list.

The Word of the Year is being named each year by the Oxford Dictionaries. They are announcing two winners, one for the US and the other one is for UK.

“In most years, 2012 included, the UK and US dictionary teams choose different Words of the Year. Each country's vocabulary develops in different ways, according to what is happening both culturally and in the news, and as such the Words of the Year are usually different,” as quoted from Oxford’s website.

As posted earlier, the Word Of The Year for US is GIF which defined by Oxford’s as a “verb to create a GIF file of (an image or video sequence, especially relating to an event.”

Meanwhile, the 2012 UK Word Of The Year is "omnishambles” defined as “a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations.”

“Coined by the writers of the satirical television program The Thick Of It, an omnishambles is a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, and is characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations,” as quoted from Oxford’s press release.

According to the press release, the word “omnishambles” was chosen because it has been applied to many events over the last 366 days from government PR blunders to the crisis-ridden preparations for the London Olympics.

Below is the shortlist of other candidates in no particular order:

  • Eurogeddon - referring to the potential financial collapse of those European countries that have adopted the Euro.
  • Green-on-blue – a military phrase denoting an attack made on one's side by forces that are seen as being neutral.
  • Games Maker – the name given to thousands of Olympic volunteers who ensured that the games progressed smoothly.
  • Mobot – a characteristic gesture as performed by the British long-distance runner Mo Farah on winning his events.
  • To Medal – not a new term itself but given a new lease of life this year.
  • Mummy P0rn – literature appealing to young women, the genre exemplified by the best-selling 50 Shades book series
  • Pleb - an ordinary person, especially one regarded as being of low social status.
  • Second screening – watching television while simultaneously using a second technological screen device.
  • YOLO - an acronym of the phrase “you only live once.”

The Word of the Year was selected by a team made up of lexicographers and consultants to the dictionary team, and editorial, marketing, and publicity staff.

Word Of The Year Named: GIF Is Officially The Oxford Dictionaries US Word of the Year For 2012

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 01:46 AM PST

The Word Of The Year was officially named and the lucky word that beat out competitors is the abbreviation of three separate words, Graphics Interchange Format or GIF as reported by international sites on November 12, 2012.

Reports said that GIF beats out YOLO which is also an abbreviation that stands for “You Only Live Once.”

According to the Oxford Dictionaries blog, GIF had a strong competition this year from some other words.

“GIF celebrated a lexical milestone in 2012, gaining traction as a verb, not just a noun. The GIF has evolved from a medium for pop-cultural memes into a tool with serious applications including research and journalism, and its lexical identity is transforming to keep pace,” Katherine Martin, one of the lexicographers on the judging panel said on a statement posted on Oxford Dictionaries blog.

Oxford's official definition on GIF:

“verb to create a GIF file of (an image or video sequence, especially relating to an event): he GIFed the highlights of the debate.”

A shorlist of other candidates under consideration are the following:

  • Eurogeddon: the potential financial collapse of the European Union countries that have adopted the euro, envisaged as having catastrophic implications for the region's economic stability [from euro + (Arma)geddon]
  • Higgs boson: a subatomic particle whose existence is predicted by the theory that unified the weak and electromagnetic interactions
  • MOOC: massive open online course; a university course offered free of charge via the Internet
  • nomophobia: anxiety caused by being without one's mobile phone [from no + mo(bile) + phobia]
  • Super PAC: a type of independent political action committee which may raise unlimited sums of money from corporations, unions, and individuals but is not permitted to contribute to or coordinate directly with parties or candidates
  • superstorm: an unusually large and destructive storm
  • YOLO: you only live once; typically used as rationale or endorsement for impulsive or irresponsible behavior

Oxford Dictionaries also state on their website that “the Word of the Year is chosen annually as a word that has attracted interest and that embodies in some way the ethos of the year. It need not have been coined within the past twelve months and it does not have to be a word that will endure for a significant length of time: it is very difficult to accurately predict which new words will have staying power. And while the Word of the Year has great resonance for 2012, that doesn't mean that it will automatically go into any of our English Dictionaries.”
