Real Snake on a Plane: Egyptian Cobra Forces Emergency Landing Posted: 05 Dec 2012 03:02 PM PST A real snake on a plane bit a Jordanian passenger of an Egypt Air Flight from Cairo to Kuwait on Monday, December 6, 2012, according to a news report by The Jordan Times. The 48-year-old Akram Abdul Latif reportedly hide the Egyptian cobra in his carry-on bag. Reports say that the passenger, who owns a reptile shop in Kuwait, tried to smuggle the real snake, but was unable to control it after it bit his hand. When the snake started to crawl under the passenger seats, the pilot reportedly decided to make an emergency landing in the Egyptian resort town of Al Ghardaqa on the Red Sea. The plane was reportedly carrying 90 passengers. According to an Egypt Air official, doctors tried to hold the passenger for 24 hours but he reportedly refused treatment and reiterates that his wound was only superficial. The Egypt Air official said that Latif “was bitten in his hand and after we administered first aid he insisted on taking the snake with him to Kuwait.” However, authorities confiscated the Egyptian cobra and the plane resumed its flight to Kuwait later. Experts say that the deadly venom of an Egyptian cobra, commonly found across North Africa, can kill an individual in just 15 minutes. |

Citigroup jobs cut announced, over 11,000 employees affected, expects $1.1 billion annual savings Posted: 05 Dec 2012 07:53 AM PST Citigroup, an American multinational financial services corporation with headquarters located in Manhattan, New York City, New York, announced today, Wednesday, December 05, 2012 its plan to cut jobs that will affect over 11,000 employees, and expects an annual savings of more than $1.1 billion beginning 2014. Citigroup logo Image Credit: Citigroup.com According to a press release by Citigroup on its official website this Wednesday, a series of repositioning actions will be made by the company that is being expected to lessen their expenses, without compromising their services to customers, particularly in the emerging markets. As noted in the announcement, approximately 1,900 jobs will be eliminated from the Institutional Clients Group (ICG), around 6,200 jobs cut will be coming from the Global Consumer Banking (GCB), and the rest will be from the Operations & Technology functions that support the business. “These actions are logical next steps in Citi‘s transformation. While we are committed to – and our strategy continues to leverage – our unparalleled global network and footprint, we have identified areas and products where our scale does not provide for meaningful returns.” Citigroup CEO Michael L. Corbat was quoted in the report. “And we will further increase our operating efficiency by reducing excess capacity and expenses, whether they center on technology, real estate or simplifying our operations.” Corbat, 52, added, who became the company CEO last October, after Vikram Pandit abruptly resigned from the post. “Citi has come a long way over the past several years. We have been consistently profitable; our capital strength is among the highest in the industry; and we have shed hundreds of billions in assets and businesses that are not core to our strategy.” Corbat explains further. Apparently, Citi said it expects take a pretax charge of around $1 billion for the job cuts in the fourth quarter of 2012 and roughly $100 million of related charges in the first half of 2013, noting that the adjustment may cause $900 million savings in 2013 results and an annual savings of over $1.1 billion starting 2014. Citigroup, which notably has the world’s largest financial services network, servicing 140 countries with around 16,000 global offices, noted that the cost reduction plan may affect markets in Brazil (14 branches), Hong Kong (7), Hungary (4), Korea (15), and the United States (44). |
Earliest dinosaur found in Tanzania, as small as Labrador retriever, new research study suggests Posted: 05 Dec 2012 06:36 AM PST The so-called earliest dinosaur was believed to have been found, which was said to be about the same size of a Labrador retriever, based on the fossilized bones discovered in Tanzania in the 1930s. Researchers have recently conducted an analysis on the fossils, which are housed in Natural History Museum in London. “Earliest dinosaur” Nyasasaurus parringtoni (Artist’s impression) Image Credit: Mark Witton/Natural History Museum According to Discovery News on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, this supposed world’s oldest dinosaur is now named Nyasasaurus parringtoni, the combination of Nyasa, a term for lizard, and honoring the name of Rex Parrington, a University of Cambridge paleontologist who first discovered the fossils. As noted in the report, Nyasasaurus, which the findings fully described in the online journal Biology Letters this Wednesday, December 5, has a long neck and lengthy tail, and is being believed to have lived on earth between 240 million and 245 million years ago, about 10 million years before the present oldest dinosaur record holders. “From the few preserved bones, we estimate Nyasasaurus to be about 10 feet long with a long neck. These estimates are based on comparing the bones of Nyasasaurus to those of early dinosaurs and close relatives.” Lead researcher Sterling Nesbitt, a postdoctoral biology researcher at the University of Washington, told the paper. “We can tell from the bone tissues that Nyasasaurus had a lot of bone cells and blood vessels. In living animals, we only see this many bone cells and blood vessels in animals that grow quickly, like some mammals or birds.” Sarah Werning of UC Berkeley, co-author of the study, was quoted as saying. “If the newly named Nyasasaurus parringtoni is not the earliest dinosaur, then it is the closest relative found so far,” Nesbitt told Live Science, with his team of researchers concluding the age of the fossils based on the layer of rock in which it was found and the ages for the layers above and below it. The animal, which likely stood upright, was estimated to have weighed between 45 and 135 pounds (20 to 60 kilograms), measures from 7 to 10 feet (2 to 3 meters) in length, and 3 feet (1 m) at the hip. The said discovery also suggests that some dinosaurs have started relatively small before some species grew to bigger sizes. |
