Speeding ticket for motionless car in Baltimore reveals error (Video) Posted: 15 Dec 2012 05:51 AM PST A speeding ticket for motionless car reveals an error of high-tech devices used for tracking traffic violations in Baltimore, Maryland, according to the Baltimore Sun on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Police reportedly issued a $40 ticket to Daniel Doty who was cited for driving his four-door Mazda wagon at 38 miles per hour in a 25-mph speed zone. The wrong citation was recorded last April 24 at the intersection of 1700 block of E. Cold Spring Lane and Hillen Road in the Northeast Baltimore. The driver appealed his ticket because the photos and video clip that accompanied the speeding citation showed that his car is in full stop at an intersection. Doty said that it’s “shockingly obvious” in the police images that his car was motionless at the time he was caught over-speeding. Motionless car cited for over-speeding Video Credit: Baltimore Sun Reports say that Police are using radar guns, speed cameras and other technologies to monitor and catch traffic violations. Baltimore speed camera contractor, Xerox State and Local Solutions explained that ticketing procedures passes through several levels of verification to ensure accuracy of the citation. On Friday, Baltimore District Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland reportedly dismissed the case filed by Doty. The driver was reportedly asking the judge to award him costs for the time taken to fight the citation ticket. Judge Copeland explained that Doty‘s demand is “really outside the purview of the court.” Reports say that several complaints were already filed against errors by the Baltimore traffic monitoring system. |

In addition, MacRumors noted that Walmart is also selling the 16GB iPad 3 for only $399, noting that the retail store earlier announced that it was iPad 4 that has a discount, but later corrected their statement and said that the third-generation iPad is the one that has a price discount, not the current iPad. “Walmart works closely with Apple to secure some of the strongest allocations of their products. That being said, inventory is a first come first serve basis so we recommend customers come early to secure their Apple product.” Walmart spokesperson Sarah Spencer told the paper about in the inventory of the discounted devices. “We will not offer rain checks but customers should know we will be refreshing our inventory on an ongoing basis.” Spencer added. Officer Gives Ticket And $100 To Motorist To Help Him Update His Registration Posted: 15 Dec 2012 12:52 AM PST A Texas officer gave a motorist a traffic ticket and $100 bill, international news sites reported on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. The officer in Plano, Texas, who refused to be identified, reportedly pulled over Hayden Carlo due to an expired registration tag. According to reports, Carlo, a father of two young kids, told the officer that he had no excuse except that he simply did not have the money. “I said ‘there's no explanation for why I haven't done it, except I don't have the money.’ I said ‘it was either feed my kids or get my registration done,’” Carlo told KTVT. The officer then gave him a traffic ticket envelope with a $100 bill inside it, which he used to update his and his wife’s registration. “I opened it up and there’s a 100 dollar bill. I broke down in my car — what else could I do?,” Carlo said. “He helped me out when I needed it and I appreciate that. I'll never forget that man. It definitely restored my faith in God,” Carlo was quoted as saying in the reports. The officer who gives ticket and $100, though unidentified publicly, will be honored by his co-workers, reports said. |
Posted: 15 Dec 2012 12:25 AM PST A so-called ‘Indiana Jones mystery package‘ was recently sent to University of Chicago, as shown in the photo below. It was sent by an unknown person and was addressed to Henry Walton Jones, Jr., the name of Harrison Ford in the 1981 George Lucas movie ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark‘, directed by Steven Spielberg. According to a post by University of Chicago on its official Tumblr page on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, they received the Indiana Jones mystery package on Tuesday, the day before, and they initially thought it was wrongly sent to their school. However, they later realized that Henry Walton Jones, Jr is a familiar name. Apparently, they decided to open the said package and were surprised to know that it has a detailed replica of the journal of Abner Ravenwood, another fictional character in the Indiana Jones story but was never portrayed in the Indiana Jones movie series. He was Indiana‘s mentor at the University of Chicago during the 1920s. Abner Ravenwood was an Egyptologist and archaeologist, and the father of Marion Ravenwood, the character played by Karen Allen in the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie and in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull back in 2008. His lifelong obsession was to find the Ark of the Covenant. “The book itself is a bit dusty, and the cover is teal fabric with a red velvet spine, with weathered inserts and many postcards/pictures of Marion Ravenwood (and some cool old replica money) included.” A statement reads at UChicagoAdmissions.tumblr.com, noting that the Indiana Jones mystery package has no real stamps on it. “It’s clear that it is mostly, but not completely handmade, as although the included paper is weathered all of the “handwriting” and calligraphy lacks the telltale pressure marks of actual handwriting. There is no US postage on the package, but we did receive it in a bin of mail, and it is addressed to the physical address of our building, Rosenwald Hall.” The university added. Nevertheless, the university emphasized that the package they received was not the one sold at eBay auction last October 24, which is also a replica of Marion Ravenwood‘s journal in the Indiana Jones movie, noting that the cover color is different and has other inconsistencies as compared to what they had. Moreover, reports said that Ichiro turned down two larger multi-year deal offers to remain with the Yankees. Ichiro batted .261 with four homers, 28 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 95 games with the Mariners, then hit .322 with five homers, 27 RBIs and 14 steals in 67 games for the Yankees, Sports Illustrated reported. Best Buy bid deadline extended for founder Richard Schulze Posted: 14 Dec 2012 11:57 PM PST The Best Buy bid of founder Richard Schulze has been extended to February 28, 2013, according to the consumer electronics retailer’s report on Friday, December 14, 2012. Schulze reportedly proposed to acquire Best Buy for $24 to $26 per share, or a total of $8.16 billion to $8.84 billion in a bid last August. Best Buy allowed the bid extension so that Schulze can make a due diligence review of the full-year results of the company. Schulze will also have more time to gather more partners and financing in his Best Buy bid. The bid extension has allowed Schulze to submit his offer any time during February. Best Buy will reportedly review his bid within 30 days before making a decision. Schulze revealed that his bid will be funded through private equity, debt financing and reinvestment of some of his own equity in the company. Reuters reported that an anonymous source revealed that Schulze does not yet have enough financing for a December bid. The Best Buy founder reportedly remains its largest shareholder with about one-fifth of the company’s outstanding shares. Matt Furman, Best Buy spokesman said that the company does not expect the bid extension to affect their holiday sales. Furman added that the retailer company is “determined to have a strong holiday season,” both in stores and online. |
Feather in baby’s neck emerges from swollen pimple, removed by doctors (Photo) Posted: 14 Dec 2012 11:00 PM PST A feather in baby’s neck was seen emerging from a swollen pimple, as shown in the photo below. The baby was identified as Mya Whittington, nearly 7 months old. She was brought to a hospital in Kansas on Sunday, December 9, 2012 by her parents after they noticed that her jaw has swelled up. Feather in baby’s neck Image Credit: Aaron and Emma Whittington According to ABC News on Thursday, December 13, 2012, Aaron and Emma Whittington, Mya‘s parents, brought their daughter to Hutchinson Regional Medical because the area right below her left jaw started to grow on Saturday, December 8 up to the size on one and a half golf balls and with a “pimple” on top of it. “I was at work and my wife noticed that the left side of her neck had started to swell, and she called me at work and asked if we should take her to the emergency room. Sunday morning, when we woke up, it had doubled in size and there was a pimple-looking thing on the end of it.” Aaron Whittington told ABC News. As told to them by the Whittington couple, baby Mya was checked by the doctors and did not noticed anything unusual and thought she only had a staph infection of her lymph nodes. However, nothing came out after they tried to drain the baby’s neck, and her parents earlier thought that it is only due to a swollen gland. Nevertheless, the Whittingtons said that only after hours later, they noticed a half-inch ‘string-like’ object is coming out from Mya‘s neck and immediately call the doctors, who were surprised when they have pulled it and realized that it was 2-inch feather, which caused the baby’s neck to swell. “As far as how the feather got into the side of the neck, our doctor says we’ll probably never really know. But her best guess is that she either inhaled it or tried swallowing it and it got lodged in the throat somewhere, and the body, just being crazy, just started to reject it and force it out the side of her neck.” Mr. Whittington added. Apparently, her pediatrician says that Mya now has “100% recovered” and that no surgery is required since the scar on her face will eventually heal on its own. |
Same-sex Army wife banned from joining Fort Bragg officers spouses club Posted: 14 Dec 2012 08:48 PM PST A same-sex Army wife was banned from joining club for spouses called Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses (ABOS) of Fort Bragg, which is being dubbed as the largest Army installation in the US. A petition was recently launched, asking the club to allow her to join, as well as other wives of lesbian Army members. Ashley Broadway (left) and her spouse Lt. Col. Heather Mack Image Credit: Ashley Broadway via NBC News As noted at NBC News on Friday, December 14, 2012, Ashley Broadway, who married her 15-year companion, Lt. Col. Heather Mack last November, said she was not allowed to join the ABOS. The couple has a 2-year-old son and Mack is now 8 months pregnant with their second child. “I was really hurt by the denial. Living for years under ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,’ I couldn’t be a part of the military family. After ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,’ I thought, wow, I can finally be part of something, finally give back to the military community in ways other than just writing a check.” Broadway told the report. “So it was a blow. A real blow. Here, I thought things were progressing. I was knocked back down.” Broadway added, noting that ABOS president Mary Ring told her her application was denied because she does not have a military spouse identification card, a rule that was reportedly added only a few weeks ago. Last Monday, December 10, Ashley Broadway wrote an open letter to ABOS about her denied application to their spouses club, saying that she has been in a committed relationship with her spouse since 1997 and they were married last November 30; and asking them to re-consider her application. “When I decided to dedicate myself to my spouse, I knew all too well I was dedicating myself to the Army as well. My record of service to the military community would be an outstanding addition to your group. I began volunteering to assist military families.” Broadway wrote on her open letter, published at Militarypartners.org, the official website of American Military Partner Association, where the online petition was published. On Friday late night, the Little Rock Spouses’ Club (LRSC), a private organization and is not a part of the Department of Defense, announced its support to Ashley Broadway and other same-sex Army wives, noting that they proposed a motion to amend the LRSC Constitution regarding membership, and 30-day review period for members is now open. Meanwhile, NBC News said that they received an email from Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses with a statement saying, “In response to recent interest in the membership requirements of our organization, we will review the issue at our next board meeting.” |
