RH Bill approved by Senate on 2nd and 3rd readings, 13 senators vote ‘yes’, 8 senators vote ‘no’

Manila, Philippines – The controversial Senate Bill No.2865 or The Reproductive Health Act (RH Bill) has been approved by majority of local senators on its second and third readings, 13-8 this Monday, December 17, 2012, despite the strong opposition of the Catholic Church and some conservative groups.

As aired in local TV networks on Monday early evening, the eight senators who voted ‘No’ to the RH Bill include Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, and senators Manny Villar, Vicente “Tito” Sotto, Aquilino Pimentel III, Jinggoy Estrada, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Gringgo Honassan, and Antonio Trillanes IV.

On the other hand, the 13 senators who voted ‘Yes’ to RH Bill are Mirriam Defensor Santiago, Panfilo Lacson, Pia Cayetano, Edgardo Angara, Joker Arroyo, Alan Peter Cayetano, Franklin Drilon, Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Teofisto Guingona III, Loren Legarda, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, and Ralph Recto.

Apparently, senators Sergio Osmena III and Lito Lapid were not present during the Senate vote. Most of the senators voiced out their side and cited their reasons for their votes, while there are those who announced that they will later pass their explanations. President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, or PNoy has earlier certified the RH Bill as urgent.

“We have to consider that not all Filipinos are Catholics. We have Muslims, Protestants, Buddhists, non-believers. Today, I vote as a Filipino, a public health advocate, a father.” Senator Angara said on his speech, noting that while he acknowledges the concerns of the Catholic Church, the RH Bill does not legalize abortion.

Last Thursday, December 13, majority of the House of Representatives voted for the RH Bill, 113 congressmen voted “yes” and 104 congressmen voted ‘no’ on its second reading; and it was also approved on its third and final reading today, Monday, with 133 House members voting ‘yes’ and 79 voted ‘no,’ while 7 members were abstained.

The huge asteroid 4179 Toutatis flyby of Earth was caught on video by the NASA Deep Space Network antenna in Goldstone, California, according to a Space.com report on Sunday, December 16, 2012.

About 64 radar images, with resolution of about 12 feet (3.75 meters) per pixel, taken from Wednesday to Thursday (December 12-13) were seen on the 40-second video.

Toutatis video was taken at a distance of about 4.3 million miles (7 million kilometers) from Earth or approximately 18 times away from the moon.

Reports say that the giant elongated, irregularly shaped asteroid measures about 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) with multiple ridges.

The latest asteroid video reportedly reveals the movement of Toutatis. According to scientists, Toutatis asteroid reportedly spins on its long axis every 5.4 days.

Researchers say that the huge asteroid flyby did not indicate any danger to Earth and it will not threaten the planet over the next four centuries.

The Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts has listed Toutatis as a potentially hazardous object that can cause future catastrophic damage on Earth.

Scientists believed that the same size of asteroid led to the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

As featured in their live webcast noted at its official media website on Friday, December 14, 2012, Southwest Airlines had its 2012 Investor Day, where among the speakers include Southwest President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board Gary Kelly, and Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Robert “Bob” Jordan.

“I’ve got several things that I want to announce this morning. First, we are increasing our current ancillary fees. That includes AirTran fees, Southwest third bag and overweight bag fees, our Early Bird charge, and a number of other fees.” Bob Jordan was quoted in his speech, noting that the new fees will take effect in the first quarter of 2013.

“Second, building on a success of our revamp and very popular boarding process and our very popular Business Select and Early Bird products, we are testing a new revenue stream enabled by selling open and premium boarding positions.” Jordan added, who is also the President of AirTran Airways.

“And finally, we have made the decision to tighten the flexibility around our most restrictive tickets. Specifically, we will implement a no-show fee for reuse of funds associated with restrictive tickets that are not flown and not cancelled by our passengers prior to flights.” Jordan explained further.

As noted by the airline executives, the third bag and for overweight or oversize bags will rise to $75 from $50, while the “early bird” check-in fee will increase from $10.00 to to $12.50. The outline for the fee to passengers who will fail to cancel a restricted ticket before missing a flight will be announced later.
